Selling Your Craft

How to Sell Candles on Etsy

Candles are a strong product to sell: a candle that costs $4–7 to make routinely sells for $18–35, and demand spikes around every holiday. Here's how to get your first listings right.

Price for profit

A simple formula is materials × 3.5–4 = retail price. Don't undersell — the margin needs to cover your time, fees, and the inevitable testing batches. Bundles like '3 candles for $55' raise your average order value significantly.

Get labeling right

Candles have real labeling requirements. Include a warning label, net weight, and a wick-trim reminder. In the UK and EU, fragrance allergen disclosure (IFRA compliance) is required, and reputable fragrance suppliers provide the documentation you need. Accurate burn-time claims matter too.

Photography sells the candle

On Etsy, your photo is your storefront. Shoot in natural window light on a wooden surface with simple props like dried flowers or linen. For lit candles, a dark, moody background with a dramatic flame is the most saved format. Good photos of a $4 candle outsell poor photos of a $15 one every time.

Build momentum

Your first customers come from people who know you, the next from content, and the rest from ads — in that order. Start with two or three signature scents and one vessel, post consistently on social media, and collect buyer emails, which become your most valuable asset.
