How to Make Soy Candles at Home

Soy candles are the perfect first candle: clean-burning, forgiving, and loved by buyers. With a bag of soy wax and a few basics, you can pour a beautiful candle on your kitchen table. Here's the full beginner method.

Why soy wax?

Soy is the most beginner-friendly wax: it's affordable, clean-burning, sustainable, and has an excellent hot throw. A little frosting on the surface is normal and even appreciated by buyers who value a natural look. Golden Brands 464 is a popular, reliable choice.

What you'll need

Soy wax, candle-safe fragrance oil, pre-tabbed cotton wicks sized for your jar, glass jars (8oz mason jars are classic), wick stickers or a glue dot, a pour pot, a thermometer, and a wick-centering bar or pencil.

The method

Stick a wick to the bottom centre of each jar and keep it centred. Melt the wax to 75–80°C, then cool to 60–65°C and stir in fragrance (around 7%) slowly for two minutes. Pour at 55–60°C, leaving 1cm of headspace. Let it cool undisturbed — no fridge, no drafts.

Fixing the finish

Soy shrinks as it cools, so sinkholes are normal — top them off with a small second pour of remelted wax. For a smooth top, pour at the right temperature and avoid drafts. Trim the wick to 6mm before the first burn.

Cure before burning

Resist the urge to light it straight away. Soy candles need at least 48–72 hours to cure, and 1–2 weeks for the best scent throw. The wait dramatically improves how strongly your candle fills a room.
